Building Routines That Actually Last

By Imani Price

Forget the perfect reset. Small systems, honest goals, and room for real life make change easier to keep.

Every January, millions of people build elaborate new routines — wake up at 5am, meditate, journal, exercise, cold plunge, read for an hour. By February, most of those routines are gone.

The problem isn't motivation. It's design. Routines that require perfect conditions to function will fail the moment life gets complicated. And life always gets complicated.

The routines that last are the ones built around real life, not an idealized version of it. They're small enough to do on a bad day. They're flexible enough to survive a disruption. They're honest about what you actually enjoy versus what you think you should enjoy.

Start smaller than you think you need to. A five-minute walk is better than a one-hour workout you never do. A single paragraph of journaling beats a blank page you've been avoiding for weeks. Build the habit first. Build the ambition later.
